So I recently stumbled upon this obscure genre of music from the late 60s and early 70s. If the hippie culture was a manic optimistic high then this is the antipodal depressive crash that slings you down so low, so quickly and makes you so sad, so lonely, so outcast that your originally drug-induced colorful visions turn into paranoid acid-drenched fears that you might be the devil and that you have no other choice but to pray to some higher power to purge him from your body.
These are the sounds of the outland where all hope has become lost, where there is nothing left to live for, any chance of love is a joke and everyone you ever loved is dead.
Basically, exactly the kind of music I have been searching for. “Loner Folk” as it is called. Besides a lot of the Christian subtext this stuff is incredible. Sad, despondent, despairing solo singer/songwriter stuff.
